Assignment: Gems
This is my 2D midterm project, Gems, from my first semester at UAT
It is a point collection game where you have to collect the gems, avoid the bombs, and get a high score. Magic helps you quickly gain points, but must be collected over time. It is very basic, and is fairly easy to master how to play it in a short amount of time. The character is my own design, pulling from various fantasy comics I read and from the general genre of video games I played at the time. I used references from a variety of pixel art games, including several of the early final fantasy games and Chrono Trigger. It was quite interesting learning how to make a tree using so small of a pixel area, probably why I decided to keep the tree as a part of the game area. The file also includes a demo area containing other image sprites that were going to be used in the project, but mainly were unable to be in the end due to not having good enough blend tiles between the various terrains. The project originally was going to become an adventure-type game, following the role of the hero. That however was clearly beyond my abilities within Gamemaker at the time, as well as my allotted time for the project. It still may one day be continued, as working on it was actually quite fun making all the textures. |
